flu shot open discussion

Well I am one of the undecided votes on our poll and I need help and really need to do some research on the shot. I definitely don't want to get it for her but then I feel guilty because I really haven't done that much research of my own and the 'pediatricians recommend' that i get it for her. But I just don't feel right about it. So I probably wont. But I guess I would love to pick apart all of your brains and if anyone has questions maybe someone will see it who knows the answer:) I need to stop rambling now soo let's talk about the flu shot-I really want to hear all of your thoughts on it...

there are always things you can do.

jovie has a cold right now and i called the nurse today and she told me of a couple things that help that i didn't know about yet.
*baby saline spray that loosens up the boogies and helps them get suckered out.
*and tilting the mattress in the crib so her head is elevated a little. (probably not a great idea for littlelittle ones though...?)
so now we're doing those along with the humidifier and vicks and tylonol...hopefully she gets better soon.

anyway back to the flu shot....i searched it on babycenter.com and read this

"If your child has a serious allergy to eggs, your doctor will probably advise against giving him a flu shot, which is made with egg protein...

Until recently, children with egg allergies were advised against receiving the MMR vaccine, which is made with chick embryo cells. But recent studies have established that kids who are allergic to eggs are not adversely affected by the MMR vaccine."

I guess this is kinda my oppinion on things like this. Here is a link below(copy and paste) to Dr. Mercola's site. He is anti-vaccination, pro vitamin and alternative medicine and style of life.. I guess this is kinda what I seem to drift towards. Some of the things he does or says are to an extreme for me. I just take what I can from him and other people I talk to and apply it to my life the best I can or see fit. Tell me what you think. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/10/21/avoid-flu-shots-vitamin-d-is-a-better-way.aspx

Thank you for sharing that article devyn! It really helped me with my decision not to get it for Jovie.

I also read his article on the connection between vaccines and autism. Very interesting.

He suggests not getting any vaccines until the age of 2. My midwife told me that whooping cough is going around again though because people aren't getting their booster every ten years like they're supposed to. Alot of grandparents are giving whooping cough to new little babies. So sad and scarey. Is it okay to go around asking people if they have their booster up to date before holding your little one? I'd say yes. But I also think that babies should get the pertussis as soon as they can to help protect against it.

Every year I get the flu shot myself, because if I miss a weeks worth of work, that seriously affects my family's finances. But I did get Madi the flu shot this year. I discussed with my pediatrician. The elderly and you children are at a higher risk of getting the flu and having complications from it. They ask if the child has an allergy to eggs. If so....I'd avoid it. Madi only experience redness around the injection site (but she also had another vaccination at the same time so not sure which one left the redness). Madi seems perfectly fine. This is a personal decision for mommies to make.

Aiden got it this year and they gave him the flu-mist. I got it as well and didn't experience any side effects. Aiden was a preemie and his left lung is underdeveloped. He is always sick and I was leary about getting it but he didn't get sick from it at all!
